The project began in december 2015 after the breakup of Sunkook's former band in the local indie scene of Seoul. Although the breakup was a result of personal life events rather than the music itself, he decided to start a solo project that he'd conceived of at the corner of his mind for a long time ever since his teenage years. A type of music that is sonically more experimental and immersive. Even before the songwritings, he envisioned the image of a full length album, the number of tracks, the expansion and progression throughout the entire album from the start to the end. To match this ideal, he had to go back and forth for each song, and then he'd rearrange everything. During this period of time collecting tracks that would fit the album, many of other potential tracks had to be omitted and reserved for the next project. After the year 2019, he also decided to record, produce and mix down all the tracks on his own which is why this album resulted in coming out much later than planned.

The songs in Something Sad to Say are a collection accumulated in the time span of 3 years between 2016 and 2019. Some of them were written while he was living in Seoul and the others in Gothenburg, Sweden. The main influence that built up this album was the phenomenal alternative sounds from the 90s and the 2nd generation of shoegaze (nugaze) in the early-mid 2000s; cranked up distorted and smooshed guitar drones on upbeat drum samples. Haemi is a solo/duo project band where Sunkook Lee designs the concept of the project and writes/produces/mixes the materials and Lina Lee partakes in some of those materials to add some ethereal touch on them.

'Something Sad to Say' tells a story of someone who is disheartened and despondent and the despondency develops into delusion in hopes believing the non-existent memories they have happened in real life. The realization of the truth, however, is a sad tale to tell.
